MARCH 21, 2008:
The 2007-08 season did not end the way
we had envisioned. We finished with 20 wins, which is something we can
look back on, but we came up a couple of games short of the NCAA
Tournament.
We received a bye into the semi-finals of the Big West Tournament, an
advantage gained from our successful regular season. I did however
have some concerns about the time between games and that it might
actually prove to be a slight disadvantage. That proved to be
prophetic.
Cal State Fullerton had played in the opening round, just one night
earlier. Against |
us they looked like a team that had
played recently. It took us a little time to find our rhythm and we
spent the rest of the game playing catch-up.
We make no excuses. We didn’t play well and they did. It was tough to
end the season on that note, but there is a lot to feel good about.
This team worked hard throughout the entire season and their efforts
were rewarded. After being to finish sixth, in the preseason poll we
finished first and we spent a few weeks ranked in the Mid-Major Top 25
(collegeinsider.com). There were also numerous individual
achievements.
Tremaine Towsend broke the school record for blocks with 37, while
Jonathan Heard played in the 120th game of his career, against
Fullerton. That established a new school record. Jonathan finished his
outstanding career with 1,362 points, which is third best in school
history. He ranks ninth all-time in rebounds with 534 and is among the
Top 10 in a total of eleven categories.
Along with Jonathan we will certainly miss Rai Colston, Calvin
Chitwood and Jayme Mller, who all graduate. They were outstanding
players for the Cal State Northridge program.
Next year will be a new chapter with new contributors. The list of
returnees includes Josh Jenkins, who led the Big West Conference in
assists, Tremaine Townsend, who led the Big West in rebounding, and
Deon Tresvant, our leading scorer and one of the top 3-point shooters
in the conference.
There is a lot to be excited about. We had an outstanding season and
we can build on that, heading into the 2008-09 season.
It was a great season. It was a great experience.
